Size scaling of failure strength at high disorder

چکیده
We investigate how the macroscopic response and size scaling of ultimate strength materials change when their local is sampled from a fat-tailed distribution degree disorder varied in broad range. Using equal localized load sharing fiber bundle model, we demonstrate that transition occurs perfectly brittle to quasi-brittle behaviour as amount gradually increased. When high concentration around failed regions make system more prone failure so higher required for stabilization. Increasing at fixed an astonishing effect obtained: small sizes increases with its size, usual decreasing sets on only beyond characteristic size. The increasing regime prevails even sharing, however, above results substantial reduction compared sharing. show adequate explanation can be obtained based extreme order statistics fibers' strength.

Role of disorder in the size scaling of material strength.
We study the sample-size dependence of the strength of disordered materials with a flaw, by numerical simulations of lattice models for fracture. We find a crossover between a regime controlled by the disorder and another controlled by stress concentrations, ruled by continuum fracture mechanics. The results are formulated in terms of a scaling law involving a statistical fracture process zone....
متن کاملFinite-size scaling at the jamming transition.
We present an analysis of finite-size effects in jammed packings of N soft, frictionless spheres at zero temperature. There is a 1/N correction to the discrete jump in the contact number at the transition so that jammed packings exist only above isostaticity. As a result, the canonical power-law scalings of the contact number and elastic moduli break down at low pressure. These quantities exhib...
متن کاملDiscontinuities in Size-strength Scaling Laws: Another Source of Wavy Size
Introduction: Previous studies with numerical collisional models have demonstrated that wave-like departures from traditional, linear power-law equilibrium size distributions can result from a small-size cutoff in the particle population [1–4]. At small sizes, a particle cutoff may result from the rapid removal of bodies by non-gravitational forces such as PoyntingRobertson drag or the Yarkovsk...
متن کاملDuctile Failure in High Strength Steel Sheets
Developments in computer-aided engineering and the rapid growth of computational power have made simulation-driven process and product development efficient and useful since it enables detailed evaluation of product designs and their manufacturing processes. In the context of a sheet metal component, it is vital to predict possible failure both during its forming process and its subsequent usag...
متن کاملScaling Exponents and Fluctuation Strength in High Energy Collisions
The information on dynamical fluctuations that can be extracted from the anomalous scaling observed recently in hadron-hadron collision experiments is discussed in some detail. A parameter “effective fluctuation strength” is proposed to estimate the strength of dynamical fluctuations. The method for extracting its value from the experimentally observed quantities is given. Some examples for the...
